Choose the perfect hedge for your home garden

Having a beautiful garden to relax in is every homeowner’s dream.

A well-designed garden not only enhances the aesthetics of a property, but also provides a safe and private space for families to enjoy.

When it comes to establishing boundaries to provide privacy, there are many options including walls, fences and planting, depending on the space available and level of privacy and security required. Hedges are also a popular choice, with the benefit of being able to provide a screen whilst adding some lush green and structure to the garden’s vista.

When we’re working with some of our clients discussing hedges, there’s always a choice to be made between purchasing a young hedge that will need time to grow, or investing in a more mature hedge that has already partly grown.

The final decision depends on a number of factors, such as how much immediate privacy is required and available budget. This blog post will help explain some of the benefits of purchasing a mature hedge for your own garden.

Instant Privacy, Screening, Noise and pollution Reduction

One of the key advantages of mature hedges is their ability to provide immediate privacy and screening. By purchasing pre-grown hedges, you can establish a secluded outdoor space in no time. Whether you want to block out prying eyes, create a peaceful sanctuary or reduce noise and pollution from nearby roads, mature hedges offer an instant solution without the wait.

Time and Effort Savings

Growing hedges from scratch requires significant time, patience and effort. Young hedges need regular watering, pruning and protection from pests and harsh weather conditions. Opting for mature hedges eliminates some of this nurturing process. With a mature hedge, you can skip the early stages and enjoy the benefits of an established and well-formed structure right away.

Design and Aesthetic Appeal

Mature hedges add instant beauty and elegance to any garden. They possess a well-defined shape, lush foliage and a sense of maturity that can transform the overall look of your outdoor space. Whether you prefer formal hedges for a classic garden or informal hedges for a more natural look, mature hedges offer a wide range of options to suit your personal design preferences.

Enhanced Biodiversity

Mature hedges act as valuable habitats for a variety of wildlife. They provide shelter, nesting sites and food sources for birds, insects and small mammals. By investing in mature hedges, you help contribute to the preservation of local biodiversity and create a little ecosystem within your garden.

Cost-Effectiveness

Whilst mature hedges may have a higher upfront cost compared to young hedges, they might be a more cost-effective choice in the long run. The money saved on nurturing and maintenance expenses, as well as the time saved in waiting for young hedges to grow, can make purchasing a mature hedge a wise investment, especially if you’re after a more ‘finished’ look once your new garden is complete.

So – young or old?

If you are looking to enhance your home garden with hedges, choosing mature hedges that have already partly grown is definitely a worthwhile consideration. By investing in these pre-grown beauties, you can create an enchanting, private garden that will provide privacy and enjoyment for years to come.

The Pros and Cons of Using Artificial Grass in Your Home Garden
28 Nov, 2022
It is important to have a nicely decorated garden, it is also equally as important to have a garden that is functional to you. What do you want to use your space for? A place to eat? A place to relax and sit in the sun? or maybe both? Identifying this, can help when designing your garden to make sure you include all the features you will need to be functional in the smaller garden space that you have. Here a few ideas you can include:

1. Hang furniture A great idea that can free up floor space is to hang chairs from trees in your garden. Hanging chairs is not only practical to add seating areas but also helps to save space in a smaller garden. This can be added to a corner of your garden to serve as a quiet reading area. 2. Add a gallery wall Adding a gallery wall doesn’t take up space in your garden and still adds interest whilst providing a great accent wall. It can be done easily by hanging up plant pots, the same way you would hang up pictures inside your house. This is also an inexpensive method as you can use old plant pots that you already own, to give more of a rustic look. 3. Garden mirrors One way to make your garden look bigger than it really is, is to add a garden mirror. You can use an indoor mirror for this and add some greenery around it or even add an old garden trellis or gate over the top to look more suitable. 4. Add a level Adding a raised lawn is a good way to provide more space to add garden furniture. Using the ledges along the lawn and steps can give you extra space to add plant pots and other types of garden décors. A mix of levels in your garden can also create an illusion of more foliage than there actually is. 5. Use colour A bold, vibrant colour on the walls or fences in your garden can help to bring depth into the space. This can allow the plants in front of these walls and fences to really pop and give an illusion of a wider garden space. 6. Wall mount a garden bar A garden bar is great for entertaining but can also take up a lot of room in your garden. An idea to help save space whilst still being able to achieve the same idea, is to mount a small wooden pallet (with a sheet of softer material on top) onto the wall or garden fence and attach a chain so that you are able to put up and store the bar away when it is not in use. This can then be easily pulled down when it is needed, this is space saving and still ideal for when you have guests. 7. Add outdoor lighting Adding lighting in your garden can help extended the look of your space, while also being practical in the evening. There are different ways you can add lighting to your garden. For example, adding path lights along your decking or wall lights fitted to walls or fencing.
