At Andi Way Garden Design, we love a good hedge and there is perhaps no finer example of a ‘good hedge’ than that of stately home Cirencester Park on the Bathurst Estate in the Cotswolds – home to the tallest yew hedge in the world!
You may think that hedge cutting is a gruelling garden chore that is more of a necessity than a pleasure. Indeed, the upkeep of a fine hedgerow requires work and dedication on a regular basis. But next time you’re standing aloft a stepladder, hedge-trimmer in hand, teetering to lean across to reach that ‘last branch’ you might want to spare a thought for the poor chaps who have the annual job of trimming this Gloucestershire beauty every August.
Standing at 45ft high, and 30ft wide, and 450ft in length, the hedge is the largest of its kind in the world (according to Guinness World Records), and takes two men a total of 12 days to cut back the 300-year old feature… oh, and they don’t use a stepladder, instead they have a cherry picker to enable them to do the job!
Whilst the beautiful Grade II listed mansion sits within the town of Cirencester itself, the building is completely screened by the hedge which forms a curved façade around it, meaning that passers-by can’t catch a glimpse of the property from ground level. This, in itself, comes with a myriad of benefits…
Not only are hedges beautiful when well-maintained, and the status symbol of a well-kept home, they also offer ample shelter, assist an abundance of wildlife to flourish, act as a natural burglar deterrent, create a sound barrier to outside noise, filter pollutants and, perhaps most importantly, provide privacy.
In fact, hedges can quickly create a dense, impenetrable barrier for optimal privacy and added security. These vibrant plants quickly form a dense, impenetrable barrier, providing a natural and visually appealing solution. Whether you're seeking to shield your home from curious glances, prying nosy neighbours, or simply create a robust defense against unwanted intrusion, a hedge offers a swift and effective means to enhance your outdoor living space.
Not only are hedges fast-growing, but they’re also available ‘ready-grown’ and instantly plantable, meaning you just have to have the space ready, and we can put your chosen hedge in situ for you!
Some of the fastest growing hedges readily available include Yew, Beech, Hornbeam, Privet, Hawthorn, Portuguese Laurel, and Western Red Cedar meaning that you can have the protection and security that a majestic, mature hedge provides in an instant – and we promise it won’t be as much maintenance as the Bathurst behemoth, requiring only an annual trim to keep the shape if you’re going for the natural look, and maybe three times a year for something a little more formal.
