August's Plant of the Month is quite the showstopper! Find out more about the beautiful Pinky Winky and how to get it to flourish at home.

Hydrangea paniculata (Pinky Winky)

Hydrangea paniculata, or panicled hydrangea (also known as 'Pinky Winky'), is a popular deciduous plant in the family Hydrangeaceae.

Native to southern and eastern China, Korea, Japan and Russia, the Pinky Winky is known for its large, showy, cone-shaped flower heads that change colour as they age, starting white and turning to pink. These ‘panicles’ can reach up to 40cm in length and are held on sturdy stems, making them ideal for cut flowers, and adding a beautiful two-tone effect to the garden.

As a relatively low-maintenance, hardy shrub, it can tolerate a wide range of climates and thrives in sunny to partially shaded locations.

Key Features:

  • Flower Colour: White flowers emerge in early summer, gradually transitioning to pink as the season progresses, creating a striking two-toned effect.
  • Flower Size and Shape: Large, cone-shaped flower panicles (up to 40cm long) with star-like florets.
  • Stems: Sturdy, upright stems that support the heavy flower heads.
  • Size: Typically grows to 1.5m (5 feet) tall and wide, but can be larger.
  • Hardiness: Can tolerate a wide range of climates.
  • Sunlight: Prefers sunny to partially shaded locations.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance; prune in late winter or early spring.

Uses:

  • Borders: Adds vertical interest and colour to garden borders.
  • Hedges: Can be used to create a flowering hedge.
  • Containers: Suitable for growing in large pots.
  • Cut Flowers: Flowers can be cut for fresh or dried arrangements.

Planting and Care:

  • Planting: Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and plant at the same depth as it was in the pot.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods.
  • Fertilising: Fertilise in spring with a balanced fertiliser.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or weak stems and to encourage new growth.
