General Questions

Hi there! Have some questions about our company? Find the answers below.

  • What does a garden designer do?

A garden designer helps you work out what you want from your garden, then sketches it out with hard features like paths, fences and walls as well as soft landscaping aspects such as flower beds and shrubs. A good garden designer will ask questions about your lifestyle, to understand how you’ll use your garden. They’ll also ask about any preferences you may have in terms of features, layout and even colours.

Many garden designers will then offer to help you with the project, by organising contractors and the garden supplies needed to turn the garden design into your dream outside space.

  • How much does a garden designer charge?

How much a garden designer charges will vary based on a number of factors, including the size of the outdoor space to be designed, and the complexity of the project.

When it comes to creating your ideal garden, the designer will work with you to create a garden within your budget. Trees, shrubs, plants all vary in price, as do boundaries such as fences and hedges depending on the size and style required, as a young hedge will be much cheaper to purchase than an already established hedge with immediate height and width.

  • What is the difference between a garden designer and a landscape designer?

Although sometimes used interchangeably, technically a garden design is usually associated with a space close to a building (usually a home), whereas a landscape tends to be a larger project that may or may not be associated with any kind of building. The difference between a garden designer and a landscape designer is down to the areas of space they can design. Some designers have experience in both areas.

  • How do you design a garden layout?

When Andi Way designs a garden, he visits the client on a number of occasions to talk about what they want from their garden. A popular question he asks is how much the clients enjoy gardening, which helps him understand  how active they want to be maintaining it, or whether they need a space that is more maintenance free.

Andi will also ask questions about what kind of features they’d like in it, such as any water features, pergolas or other decorative items.  He’ll also chat to them about whether they would like the space broken up into dedicated areas, maybe for eating or relaxing.

Andi then takes all the feedback to build it into an initial design, which is then taken back to the client to be discussed, and any tweaks made.

Once the design is agreed, Andi may be asked to continue to work on the garden, as a project manager, to oversee the work to transform the existing garden into the new layout, including overseeing any planting.

  • What’s the difference between garden design and 3D garden design?

A traditional sketched garden design is referred to as a 2D design. It’s great for planning out what goes where, but it can be hard for clients to see the true vision of what the garden will look like once complete.  And that’s where 3D garden design comes in…

3D garden design helps the design come to life, showing colours and textures, the proportions of the various elements against each other, and even gives the option to see the garden from different viewpoints.

  • Is 3D garden design more expensive?

At Andi Way Garden Design, all our projects incorporate a 3D garden design plan. An original 2D sketch is created, that is then developed in 3D to help bring the vision of the garden to life for our clients.

  • How do I know what plants to put into my garden?

Andi works with his wife Gaynor, who has extensive horticultural knowledge and will develop a specific planting scheme for your gardens needs, style choice and your maintenance abilities.

This will include a range of trees, hedging (where appropriate), herbaceous and shrub planting which will create the kind of schemes showcased on our website.

  • How do I maintain my new garden?

When taking the initial brief, Andi will discuss your level of involvement and maintenance requirements and, with Gaynor’s help, will create a scheme specific to your needs.

  • Who will construct my new garden?

Andi works with several local, experienced contracting teams who are experienced with quoting for and constructing a garden from his drawings.

  • How should I choose a garden designer or landscape designer?

    1. Ask for recommendations from friends, family and neighbours, about who they’ve worked with in the past.
    2. Check  the designer’s experience and qualifications, to ensure you’re comfortable that they have the right skills to take on your garden project.
    3. Ask to speak to one of their clients to get feedback on their work. Most contractors are happy to put you in touch with one of their clients, so you can ask them how happy they are with their finished garden, and any other queries you may have.
    4.  Read the contract to ensure you’re aware what you’re committing to. Whatever you’re purchasing, whether it’s the services of a garden designer of anything else, always take time to thoroughly read any contracts before you go ahead, to ensure you’re happy with all the details.

Our portfolio of work includes a wide range of garden designs from contemporary to large country gardens. Our gardens are recognised for their strong, clean, architectural lines, lush planting, and elegant styling and use of colour. We also specialise in discreet but effective garden lighting and bespoke water features.

We work collaboratively with our clients, listening to their needs. We ensure that our garden designers brief is clear and is interpreted correctly in the finished plan. Our aim is to reflect as closely as possible the styling, decoration and colour palette of the client’s home. So, that there is a strong visual relationship between the inside and outside spaces. We regularly work closely with architects and interior designers to ensure that this is achieved.

We have a select group of landscape contractors, water feature and lighting specialists with whom we work to ensure the garden design process, from initial concept to project completion, is smooth and seamless.
