GARDEN DESIGN FOR A SLOPING GARDEN

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A SLOPING GARDEN?

The Brief

This garden was always going to be a challenge due to the nature of the topography meaning the difference in height from the house to the bottom corner of the garden is several meters!

The client wanted to maintain the view across wonderful Herefordshire countryside, whilst maintaining privacy from immediate neighbours.

Although the garden is quite large, the client has a very generous balcony that is used for seating, so the rest of the garden needed another purpose.

There was a real desire for colourful native planting, with a soft and blousy feel which will interact with a contemporary framework of hard materials.

Some water was desirable, but would need to be contained and simple to manage.

The Solution

The final garden design kept the garden levels largely as they were, primarily to minimise the need for major structural works which, as well as being costly, would conflict with the feel that the client wanted to create.

The scheme included a modest seating area, to help link the house with the garden and allow the family to enjoy the afternoon sunshine. Adding a path to connect the rear doors now means the garden is accessible from any entrance.

The introduction of an additional angle that conflicts with that of the extension offers a nice visual surprise, as well as the opportunity to plant a native hedge to frame the planting around the house. The planting is a mixture of shrub and herbaceous planting to celebrate the seasonality of our climate.

The introduction of 2 livestock watering troughs were a humorous nod to the rural setting.
